About us

The choir was founded by the “Cefn Hengoed Ladies’ Club” – a band of women who came together in friendship and fellowship after the second world war. In 1947 each branch of the Ladies’ Club was asked to provide entertainment at a conference which was being held in Wales.

The Cefn Hengoed Ladies’ Club decided to sing a song and asked the then Head of Derwendeg Primary School, Mr Iestyn Evans to teach them a song they could then perform. This song was ‘Heigh Ho Come to the Fair”.

They enjoyed it so much that they asked Mr Evans or “Master” (as most of then called him) to form a choir and today we are still singing it.

We are proud that we have remained a community choir and proud that we have had generations of the same family sing with us, each inspired by those who have gone before.

Our Music Director – Gareth Kibble

Gareth started as our accompanist in 2018 and is now our Musical Director. He graduated from Cardiff University in 2008 with a BMus (Music) and went on to achieve a Masters in Advanced Music Technology from the University of Glamorgan in 2011.  He attended Lewis Boys school.

Gareth accompanies all sorts of choirs, runs keyboard ensembles. He also teaches piano, guitar, drums, and saxophone, as well as playing keyboards, guitar, and saxophone in professional function bands.

He manages to fit all this in despite running around after two small children!
